Pan Am Clinic Foundation
Despite the increased attention that concussions in sport have received over the past few years, the knowledge, attitudes and opinions of players, coaches, and parents is relatively unknown. Similarly, little information exists on how amateur players, suspected of having a concussion, make their way through the medical system. In an effort to answer these questions, the Pan Am Clinic Foundation, with the support of Football Manitoba, is attempting to reach out to all of the amateur football players, coaches and parents in the province to conduct an important research survey. A high response rate is imperative to gathering this important information. Our goal is to develop a clinical program for players that have sustained a concussion and to gain insight into the most effective manner to educate players, coaches and parents about concussions.

Getting active to solve a growing problem
Numerous sports and work-related injuries and dozens
of varieties of arthritis and rheumatism, musculoskeletal
injuries and diseases are responsible for diminishing the
quality of life for hundreds of millions of people throughout
the world.
In Canada, these conditions, which are second only to
cardiovascular diseases in the economic burden inflicted
on society, are among the most common causes of long-term
disability. The most recent federal government survey
calculated that the costs of direct care coupled with the
costs of lost productivity total a staggering $16.4 billion.
Musculoskeletal conditions affect the bones, muscles,
tendons and joints. These injuries and diseases afflict people
of all ages and at all levels of society. Through chronic pain,
loss of mobility and limitation of function, they reduce the
ability for people to remain active. This, in turn, can affect
virtually every system in the body, further affecting health and vitality.
The Pan Am Clinic Foundation is committed to advancing
the understanding and treatment of these conditions in
order to help people live healthy, active lives.
Keeping people mobile and healthy
An active lifestyle is essential to overall health
and well-being. When musculoskeletal injuries
and diseases diminish or destroy the ability
to remain active and mobile, other bodily
systems can break down. Improving our
understanding of causes, prevention and
treatment is key to reducing the burden to
society that these conditions create.
The Pan Am Clinic Foundation has been
established to provide additional funding for
high-quality patient care, education and
research in the prevention, evaluation and
treatment of musculoskeletal injury and disease.
In the area of patient care, the Foundation will
aim to develop and maintain an environment
which attracts the finest clinicians and
provides Manitobans with world class care.
Achieving this will require investment in people,
facilities and technology.
Because sharing knowledge and encouraging
innovative thinking is fundamental to making
advancements in this field, the Foundation will
support a strong educational component in the
Pan Am Clinic.
We are also strongly committed to research. This
will enable us to attract high calibre health care
professionals who will offer their investigative
and clinical skills to benefit both their fields of
study and their patients.
The Pan Am Clinic Foundation is committed to supporting the Pan Am Clinic
in making a positive difference in the lives of those with musculoskeletal
diseases, disorders and injuries. The Foundation will raise funds to help
attract the people and offer the programs to create and maintain a world
class research, education and health care organization for Manitoba and
beyond.

Pan Am Clinic investigators are conducting
research that furthers our understanding of
risk factors for musculoskeletal conditions. This
enables us to pioneer new treatments, and
evaluate and improve existing procedures. These
important activities will ensure a stimulating
environment of continuous learning for
practitioners and provide patients with access to
leading edge treatments.
The disability and time loss from work, as well as
the effect on quality of life, represent a significant
clinical problem for the population and health care
system. The Clinical Centre at the Pan Am Clinic
focuses on optimizing patient care to reduce the
burden of disease on patients and the health care
system. Our ability to track a significant number of patients from initial assessment through surgery
and annual follow-ups enables us to effectively
assess surgical outcomes. This, in turn, is used to
develop strategies to improve patient outcomes.
With an approach that allows us to continually
evaluate and monitor patient quality of life, we
maintain an environment committed to providing
the best possible care based on objective patient based
outcomes.
The Pan Am Clinic Foundation works to serve the
community by holding community educational
workshops presented by the Pan Am Clinic staff.
These workshops highlight best practices for a
positive recovery from a variety of musculoskeletal
conditions. The Foundation will also house a patient
Resource Centre, providing reference and research
material for patient and professional education.
The Foundation will serve as a meeting point
for people of all ages and will share its access
to knowledge and experience within the Clinic
by hosting a series of training and skill-building
programs.
The Pan Am Clinic Foundation funds
a world-wide postgraduate fellowship
program for the most promising young
practitioners in the areas of Orthopaedics and Primary Care.
The Pan Am Clinic Foundation has supported the
development of a Surgical Skills Training
Centre. Continuing with the success of
minimally-invasive surgeries, the Pan Am
Surgical Skills Training Centre will provide surgical skill
workshops to develop orthopaedic surgery skills. Specialized computer based
and life-like models offer extensive
opportunities for surgeons and residents
to develop the precision and accuracy
needed in the operating room. Combined
with an innovative fellowship program, the Pan Am Clinic Foundation Surgical Centre is renowned for quality
Primary Care, and Orthopaedic
practitioners.
